Which healthcare providers can certify patients to use medical cannabis?

To issue certifications for patients to receive medical cannabis, healthcare providers must be licensed, registered, or certified by New York State to prescribe controlled substances to humans within the State. These practitioners include physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, dentists, podiatrists, and midwives.

What are the New York State healthcare provider education requirements to certify patients to use medical cannabis or to work in a cannabis dispensary?

The healthcare provider must complete at least a two-hour course approved by the Office of Cannabis Management. One cannot recommend medical cannabis until approved by the Office of Cannabis Management.

Does this course satisfy all New York State requirements?

This course is approved by New York State and satisfies all of the educational requirements.

Is mobile audio an acceptable learning format for this course?

Yes.

How much does the course cost?

$199 for the 6-Lesson course, including multiple downloadable educational handouts.

Do I have to listen to all 6 Lessons to satisfy the Course requirements?

Yes.  Simply listen to all 6 Lessons and complete all 6 Quizzes with a 70% passing grade for each Lesson.  You may take each quiz as many times as necessary to achieve a 70% score.

What happens if I fail one of the quizzes?

You may retake each quiz as many times as necessary to achieve a 70% (or better) score.

Will I receive any documentation of my successful completion of this course?

Yes, upon successful completion of this course, your “Certificate of Completion” will be available for you to download.

Once a healthcare provider completes the required educational course and receives a course completion certificate, how does the provider begin issuing patient certifications or working in a cannabis dispensary?

Upon receiving a course completion certificate, you need to go to the New
York State Office of Cannabis Management website at:
 cannabis.ny.gov/medical-cannabis-program-faqs and then scroll down to the
healthcare provider section and follow the directions in FAQs # 8 and #9. One
cannot recommend medical cannabis until approved by the Office of Cannabis
Management.
